Pay As You Go
Sometimes a subscription is required to get access, but one doesn't have to pay to read. And I believe that is a small price to pay.
Yesterday two of my friends asked me about some horses. One in competition, one in breeding. Both of them most likely in Germany.
So my search via the German Federation. A website where I gladly pay a certain amount of money every year to get access to results.
Not so strange considering my horses, as Belgian registered they can be, come out of 100% German blood lines. I also pay money to their actual studbook of registry to get the member magazine and other features that I like.
So far so good.
But then I needed additional info about one of the horses I was asked about, and then it started to get a little bit complicated. Cause then I needed to pay to access the database I had found.
And here's where I see a problem. Most people I know would gladly pay for a database that had it all. Results, mother lines, pedigrees, and so on. Barely no one I know would pay for multiple sites to get all.
You know, as in you pay for one site that is like your base, and then you need to pay another site to get a detail that is not on that first site you choose to pay for and so on.
A total Catch 22 if you'd like. And a little bit like equestrian media of today. If I would pay a subscription for all the sites I normally use to find news, and other information, I would end up paying quite a lot of money every year.
That is why the articles on this website are for free. Sometimes a subscription is required to get access, but one doesn't have to pay to read. And I believe that is a small price to pay.
I also believe knowledge makes people smarter, so I will continue with this quite bad business model, at least if one like to get rich,
Cause this is a model that is more a pay-as-you-go than a real subscription. All this because I really don't want to lock my content behind a pay-wall. That is why you often see the Tip Jar and Buy Me a Coffee banners flash by.
When readers use them, it helps to pay for web hosting, and even shorter trips to various events. A different kind of pay-as-you-go that may or may not turn this site into a full time job for yours truly.
That's the aim, that's the goal. Which means I have a long road ahead of me.
Thanks for reading, liking, sharing and subscribing!
