Yippee-Ki-Yay, the stallion rankings arrived...
Truth of the matter is the ranking is indeed benefitting both stallions with a lot of competing offspring as well as the ones with a few top ones making ranking points.
It's that time of the year again, when the WFBSH announce the sire world rankings for sport horses [read dressage, eventing, showjumping], and as usual it drives me up the wall.
And I sense I could basically just not write about it but instead just choose to re-use last year's outburst on the topic.

Cause it's the same thing every year.
Stallions with a lot of average offspring can top the list just because of that. A lot of average offspring. No more, no less.
Stallions with the ONE great offspring, and a handful less talented ones could also roll into the top. This works even better when the ONE great offspring also seem to avoid any big and name worthy events. But instead focus on smaller ones, in which they pick up an insane amount of ranking points.
Stallions with offspring that perform better than average but without any clear top quality offspring benefit will also make the lists.

For sure it is hard to make a fair ranking but as a breeding tool this is 100% nonsense.
The only one truly benefitting from the somewhat twisted statistics are the marketing teams behind the stations, dealers, and stallion owners when they put together next year's marketing material.
